So I remember hearing the whole talk about the nursery ryhme Ring around the Rosie being pretty disgusting.
I just looked it up to remember what exactly it was about.
Quite disturbing I'd say.
I'm sure you've studied the Bubonic Plague, or the Black Death, in school or at least touched on it...A deadly plague that disturbingly killed tons of people back in the 1300's i think.
Ring around the rosie, Pockets full of posies, Ashes, ashes, We all fall down!
Now when you're a kid you don't really put much thought into a nursery rhyme or song. Thank god i didn't know when i was young or I'd probably have nitemares!
1.The Bubonic Plague was a bacterial disease where, after infected, would only have a few days to live if you had no treatment. You would get swollen body parts, black sores all over your body, horrific pain, and other symptoms. I read that a part in the center back of your hand is called a Rosie...Hence Ring around the Rosie...spots on your hands (and all over the rest of your body).
2. Here's where it starts getting more disgusting. It was said that people would carry around posies, a kind of flower, around in the pockets of their clothing to keep the stench away of the rotting people around them. So many people where dying and actually DECOMPOSING while they were still alive!
3. Now it should be easy for you to figure the rest out. After the infected would die, the bodies were burnt into ashes. "Ashes, ashes, We all fall down!" is referring to the result of death & being burnt.
Wasn't that so enlightening?! Not!
